AcuDetox / 5NP / NADA Protocol

These are all synonyms for a “5 needle protocol” (5NP) developed at Lincoln Detox in the Bronx in the 1970s, known as Acupuncture Detoxification or “Acu-Detox” and sustained by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) which is why it’s widely known as the NADA protocol. Originally developed for addiction recovery, 5NP is now widely used for mental health support including in disaster situations.

Ear Seeds or Press Balls

“Ear seeds” are the sterilized seeds of the vaccaria plant, stuck on tiny pieces of medical tape or latex-free stickers. These seeds are just the right size to stimulate acu-points in the ear. There are also “press balls” or “ear beads” – metal balls manufactured to be about the same size as vaccaria seeds, and stuck to tape/adhesive in the same way.

Sometimes we use ear seeds or press balls in the clinic to stimulate the points more gently than needles. For example, a lot of kids might get press balls instead of pins. We also use them to help extend the effects of an acupuncture treatment when results aren’t sticking. You can also use them as a way to treat yourself at home!
